5 Work at Home Scams - And How to Avoid Them

Giving up your day job, getting rid of that overbearing boss, and working at home is a tempting thought! But have you ever really thought about what you'd do for a living from home?

Unfortunately, there are a ton of scam artists out there who are trying to make a quick buck off your dreams of working at home. In fact, you probably have plenty of bogus work at home proposals sitting in your inbox right now!

There are tons of scams out there, but some are more common than others. If you're looking for the right work at home opportunity, stay away from these 5 scams:

1. Craft Assembly

It sounds so easy - making dolls, toys, and crafts right from the comfort of your own home. Once you're done, you get paid a big chunk of money. And to get started, all you have to do is buy the starter kit.

Unfortunately, though, it's not that easy. The company that sounded like a dream to work with now tells you that you didn't do the work right and now you're not getting paid. What you didn't know when you signed up was that these companies don't make money off of selling crafts... they make money off of selling starters' kits to people like you!

2. Envelope Stuffing

How hard can it be, right? To make money from home, all you have to do is find companies that'll pay you to stuff envelopes for them - and you get to do it right from home! To make things even easier, there are companies out there that'll sell you a starter kit to get you on your way.

The only trouble is, big companies already have machines that stuff and stamp envelopes for them. So, why would they pay you to do it? Once again, you're stuck dealing with scam artists who make all of their money selling starters' kits!

3. Re-shipping

This one isn't just a scam; it can actually land you in some serious hot water. In re-shipping scams, someone pays you to have a package delivered to your house. When you get it, you're supposed to re-pack it and mail it to another address. The only trouble is, the stuff inside has usually been stolen or bought with a stolen credit card. Before you know it, the police could be knocking on your door!

4. Processing Health Insurance Claims

Health insurance is a big industry and there are plenty of people out there trying to convince you that you can join it from home. Chances are, you've gotten plenty of emails that tell you to buy some software, pay for some training - and, just like that, insurance companies will pay you to process their claims.

However, most of the training out there isn't legitimate, so you won't know what you need to about health insurance claims. And, insurance companies already have employees who process claims, so they're not going to pay you to do it from home.

5. Online Businesses

These "opportunities" are circulating like wildfire! A "guru" out there is offering to sell you all of his or her secrets for a few hundred bucks. Before you know it, you're an online millionaire without having to do much work! Guess what? Building an online business isn't nearly that simple!

So, how can you avoid getting scammed by these and other work at home scams?

- Never fall for promises of quick cash with very little effort.

- Never call a 900 number for more information. If a company has a legitimate job or information line, it'll be on a toll-free 800 number.

- Never pay for a starter kit. Legitimate employers pay to train their employees, not the other way around.
